Torres Pilots Pty Ltd are now seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced mariners for the role of Marine Coastal Pilot based in Cairns & Mackay.

Torres Pilots provides Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) licenced pilots in the three compulsory pilotage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and is issued by AMSA with a Pilotage Provider Licence confirming Torres Pilots compliance with the requirements specified in M054 (Coastal Pilotage).

Pilots must comply with AMSA and service standards for qualifications, watch keeping experience and under keel clearance management.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is responsible for the issuing of GBR pilot licences and the following are requirements stipulated for eligibility to train as a marine coastal pilot:

  • Entitled to live and work in Australia.
  • Holds a certificate of competency as Master for ships of 3000 or more gross tonnage issued under Marine Orders, Part 3.
  • Holds an AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness.
  • Has satisfactorily completed an approved pilotage training course for trainee pilot induction (AMPT & BRM courses).
  • Completed while holding a certificate mentioned above, at least 36 months of sea service as master, navigating officer in charge of a watch or pilot on ships 500 or more gross tonnage.
  • Completed 18 months of the service in the 5 years immediately before the person is being considered.
  • Previous pilotage experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience of working aboard a variety of commercial vessels with multinational crewmembers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing clear navigational advice and information on regulatory requirements to vessel masters.
  • Supporting vessel masters in their communication with personnel and other vessels in the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Conduct of navigation and bridge management duties.
  • Recording and submitting passage plans.
  • Upholding the reputation of Torres Pilots in the delivery of safe operations and outstanding customer service.
